SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA-NEVADA STUDENTS VOLUNTEER AT LOCAL FARM
ORANGE COUNTY, Calif.; February 18, 2017— Students in Circle K International (CKI), the world’s largest student-led collegiate service organization, will collaborate for their first major service project of the year, District Large Scale Service Project. Over 400 CKI members from 28 schools around southern California and Nevada will be volunteering around Orange County, California, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Service sites for the day include Bolsa Chica Conservancy, El Modena High School, Upper Newport Bay Preserve and Irvine Ranch Open Space. Partnering with OC Parks, students will help with the removal of invasive plants, which have grown massive from recent rains. At El Modena High School, students will assist in beautification tasks around the campus and the school’s nature center.
The event is being planned by UCLA junior Lily Lequang, a member of the Service Committee of CKI members from around California and Nevada. When planning the event, Lequang selected these sites because they reflect CKI’s “Serve to Conserve” service initiative.
“(District Large Scale Service Project) is a day that really brings everyone in our organization together and shows that community service transcends borders,” Lequang said. Held annually, this series of projects not only unite the neighboring clubs and serve as a networking opportunity for college students, but also amplify their impact on the community.
This day is one of two large-scale service projects that take place every February. Last weekend, on February 11, CKI hosted a similar event in northern California that brought together over 200 students at the UC Gill Tract Farm in Albany.
