June Service Spotlight

De Anza
un-li-mi-ted ICE CREAM. This month, De Anza had the chance to work with HOPE Services at Happy Hollow zoo with their 3rd annual Ice Cream Zoofari! Some much needed treats to beat the heat. You forget you’re volunteering when you’re doing it with unlimited ice cream. It was a blast. We got to hang out with children who didn’t get a lot of ice cream in their life. Just brining them a cup of orange sorbet and seeing them light up was something indescribable. The proceeds go to the Morgan Autism Center’s programs for children and the Happy Hollow Park & Zoo membership program for individuals with developmental disabilities.

East Bay
Our service project of the month was helping out with Special Olympics! We got to hang out with our K-family. We were fed, and we got to take food home!

PCC
On June28th, a few of us met up at 7:00am to head off to Newport Beach for the service project “Roots Day”. After registering for the event we were informed on what we were going to be doing for the day by Jennifer (an employer). There were fields with orange flags placed in spots where plants were planted by volunteers through out the past years. Some of these plants were still healthy while others were not. The assignment for the day was to water all the plants from a canal not too far. Our main goal for the day was to make sure each plant has a chance to continue to live.

SDSU
The project of the month this month is the Rock ‘n Roll Marathon. The original purpose of the marathon was to raise money and awareness for families affected by cancer. As a club, we went out to pass out water to the runners and help cheer for them at the finish line. We were cheering with kids and adults alike, easily making this our most fun project of the month.

UC Berkeley
Real Options for City Kids Summer Camp (Attendees: 12) Real Options for City Kids gave us an amazing weekend opportunity to be camp counselors for underprivileged children from the Bay Area! The camp had a variety of fun activities bonding the camp counselors and kids together. This was UC Berkeley Circle K's first summer camp service project and we hope to come back next year!

UCLA
UCLA Circle K’s service spotlight of the month has got to be our newly established, “Lange Foundation.” Our club has volunteered with “Amanda Foundation,” an animal shelter for dogs, multiple times throughout the year. However, this month we were able to locate another animal shelter that has welcomed us with open arms. Members were able to enjoy the benefits of attending “Amanda Foundation,” but with other animals as well. This will be a foundation that our club will continue to volunteer at for years to come.

UCSD
I would say that the Best Service Project of the month would be the Reality Changers Banquet. I feel that was the best service project because we have been working with and creating a relationship/bond with these high school students and the banquet was a great time to celebrate the accomplishments that they have achieved. It was a joyous celebration in which we were able to acknowledge and recognize the kids for their good grades, scholarships they've achieved throughout the school year, as well as the colleges that the seniors got accepted to. This project is also the best service project of June because it is not just a one time thing, but an on going project in which we have the opportunity and chance to really be a part of and make a difference in these high schoolers lives.

UNLV
It’s hard to select a service project of the month because all projects help out our communities greatly but this month one service project stood out amongst the rest. Put together by our very own member, Rachel Ngo, in cooperation with the Las Vegas Young Professionals Kiwanis and Nevada Commerce Bank, this month’s service project of the month is the LVYP Yard Sale. Borrowing a house from one of our fellow Kiwanians, the Young Professionals group put together a Yard Sale and raised money for the China Earthquake relief fund. To make the project even better, any money that we raised at the Yard Sale would be matched by the Nevada Commerce Bank!

Our service project of the month is Meals on Wheels. This is one of the many senior meal programs that are working tirelessly to bring meals to seniors in need. After the food is prepared, we pair up with our Kiwanians and head out to deliver meals to the homebound seniors in Davis. It was great chatting with our Kiwanians and getting to know them. As we stopped at each location, I felt that we weren’t just delivering meals, but providing companionship as well. Some of these seniors can barely walk and are very lonely. So not only are we making sure they have something to eat, we are also becoming their friend as we make small talks with them.

UNR
Storm Drain Stenciling is our service project of the month for UNR. We teamed up with our sponsoring Kiwanis club and took a trip to tahoe to help paint signs by storm drains that drain to the lake. The signs read “No Dumping Drains To Lake” and were stenciled on nearly 80 drains throughout the day.
