STUDENTS OF UCR HOST ANNUAL LEADERSHIP EVENT FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS – KEY TO COLLEGE

RIVERSIDE, California; May 21, 2016 — UC Riverside’s chapter of Circle K International (CKI), a community service organization, hosted its annual college education and outreach program on Saturday from 8:30AM-4:00PM on the UC Riverside campus. Almost a hundred high school students attended this event.

Some of the schools students came from included Redlands High School, John W. North High School, Martin Luther King High School, Notre Dame High School, Walnut High School, Rancho Cucamonga High School.

Key to College is a day-long program for college-bound high school students to show them first-hand aspects of college life while fostering a fun and interactive environment for current college students to mentor high school students. This year’s Key to College theme was The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Attendees were separated into four groups similar to the groupings of the four houses of Hogwarts School and attended workshops about navigating college life.

Some of the workshops featured were College 101, an admissions and financial aid workshop; Avoiding Freshman 15, a healthy lifestyle workshop; and Botany and Muggle Studies, a workshop introducing an environmental service project where attendees planted beans into small cups. Along with these workshops, there were also dorm tours led by undergraduate students currently living in the residential halls.

“Overall, key to college was a successful event. With the help of my many volunteers, we were able to make a great and educational experience for the Key Club members. They definitely left enchanted by the magic of service from Circle K at UC Riverside.” said 1st year UC Riverside student Calvin Chau, who is in charge of organizing the event.

Key to College was sponsored by the Kiwanis Club Of Riverside and Uptown Kiwanis. Kiwanis Club Of Riverside, Uptown Kiwanis and Circle K International are all part of Kiwanis International, a service organization located in over 80 nations with the mission of serving the children of the world.
